Wifi

Wifi formerly stood for “Wireless Fidelity,” but the Wi-Fi Alliance that designed the standard is moving away from that designation. The standard exists so that manufacturers can produce interoperable components that will be compatible in a wireless environment.

If not for this common standard, each manufacturer would have proprietary wifi, making it very difficult for consumers to buy equipment. Every network would have to be built around a single brand name. Moreover, individual networks of different brands would have no way to communicate with one another, and public access strategies would be all but impossible.

WIFI is a wireless network standard certification for wireless networks. Wireless internet is just a slang people use for their wireless home routers. WIFI certification really isn't necessary given that all wireless cards are standards based today. The standards are 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n today. 

 The 802.11b and 802.11g are most commonly found and are a must to have, note though that many vendors will only state 802.11g it it's required to be backwards compatible to 802.11b, most vendors will label it as 802.11b/g because of this. The newest standard is not commonly found 802.11n .
